The history of Shimogamo Shrine is very old, the legend says that the deity was enshrined and worshipped in February of the second year of Emperor Jimmu (658 BC),
and the origin of the current Mikage Festival began around 580 BC, and there is a record that the fence of the shrine was repaired in 90 BC, so it's believed that worship began even earlier.
When Heian-kyo was built in Kyoto, this was the first place where prayers were offered for the success of the new capital city.
Since then, Shimogamo Shrine has been designated as the tutelary deity of the imperial family, as well as a shrine to pray for the peace of the people,
as a deity protecting people's lives by warding off evil, bringing good fortune, granting children, ensuring safe childbirth, and protecting children.
The nobles of the Heian period held moon viewing parties to enjoy looking at the moon and composing waka poems, and we're still doing the same thing.
Why do people look up at the moon?
When I see a beautiful full moon, I remember the moonlight I saw when I was a little kid taking a bath with my grandmother in a little tub on the balcony.
It was on a little balcony, and the tub was small, it wasn't like the bathrooms we have now, but it was the most beautiful scene I ever remember, with the moon and the moonlight that I saw at that time.
The reasons may be different for each person, but I'm sure there is something in common that makes us look up at the moon, a common heart that everyone in the world has.
